“Hard Knocks: Training Camp With the New York Jets” premieres Aug. 11 on HBO

By Ryan Berenz

To say that there’s buzz about the New York Jets is an understatement. No, that buzz is more like the deafening roar of a Boeing going throttle-open down the LaGuardia runway.

The Jets are coming off a loss to Indianapolis in the AFC Championship, and they’re a popular preseason favorite to win the AFC — if not more — this season. Their confident and colorful head coach, Rex Ryan, has the Jets throwing their weight around the league (though Ryan lost weight himself, thanks to offseason lap-band surgery). Their quarterback, Mark Sanchez, enters his second season and is already an Internet legend for his “poise” on the field and with the ladies. Their rushing attack, tops in the NFL a season ago, now has LaDainian Tomlinson, who spent the past nine seasons with San Diego and is now out to prove he’s still a premier back. The No. 1 defense from ’09 returns arguably the NFL’s best defensive player in CB Darrelle Revis (if he ever ends his holdout), and adds CB Antonio Cromartie. Longtime Jets nemesis DE Jason Taylor is now in the fold, as is former Super Bowl MVP WR Santonio Holmes. The Jets appear on ESPN’s Monday Night Football a league-leading three times. And they’ll play in the nifty New Meadowlands Stadium opening this season.

Where to watch the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Ceremony

By Ryan Berenz

Guard Russ Grimm, linebacker Rickey Jackson, cornerback Dick LeBeau, running back Floyd Little, defensive tackle John Randle, wide receiver Jerry Rice, and running back Emmitt Smith will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, in this ceremony. The seven-man class of 2010 was elected by the Pro Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee from a list of 17 finalists. Two of the enshrinees, Smith and Rice, were virtual shoo-ins to enter the Hall in their first year of eligibility. Rice is the NFL’s career receiving and touchdowns leader, having played 20 seasons, most notably with the San Francisco 49ers. Smith is the NFL’s all-time leading rusher, amassing 18,355 yards in 15 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals. ESPN airs the ceremony live on Saturday, Aug. 7, at 7pm ET. Here are the details from ESPN:

Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Ceremony Live on ESPN Saturday at 7 p.m.

ESPN’s Chris Berman, who will be honored Friday night in Canton with the Hall of Fame’s Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award at the Enshrinees Dinner, will again emcee the ceremony. The seven members of this year’s class include: Russ Grimm, Rickey Jackson, Dick LeBeau, Floyd Little, John Randle, Jerry Rice, and Emmitt Smith. The telecast – which will re-air Sunday, Aug. 8, at 2 p.m. on ESPN Classic – will review each inductee’s career and include speeches by the inductees and their presenters.

NFL preseason kicks off Aug. 8 on NBC

By Ryan

I think I’m about ready to shovel the dirt on my favorite MLB team, but I’m not quite ready for football yet. And I probably won’t be ready until the first week of September. There’s almost nothing in the NFL preseason that gets me fired up for the regular season. Preseason games don’t count for anything, and usually I’m happy to just get through it injury-free. Teams that look like they’re actually trying to win preseason games annoy me. I’m fine with an 18-game regular season so long as they get rid of some of these useless practice games. So, now that I’ve got that out there, here are the details from NBC on their coverage of this weekend’s useless practice Hall of Fame Game from Canton, Ohio:

“NBC SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL” KICKS OFF 2010 SEASON WITH HALL OF FAME GAME, COWBOYS VS. BENGALS, SUNDAY AT 8 PM ET

Bengals WR Terrell Owens Faces the Cowboys, His Former Team, For the First Time

EA SPORTS Madden NFL 11 Pigskin Pro-Am: Flag Football Game Featuring NFL Legends & Hollywood Stars to Air Sunday on NBC at 7 PM ET Preceding Hall of Fame Game

NEW YORK – August 4, 2010 – “NBC Sunday Night Football” will make its 2010 season debut with the Hall of Fame Game between the defending NFC East champion Dallas Cowboys and the AFC North champion Cincinnati Bengals from Canton, Ohio, Sunday at 8 pm. ET.  Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth will have the call from Canton with Andrea Kremer handling the reporting duties.

The NFL will open this season on NBC, Thursday, Sept. 9, with the Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints hosting the NFC North champion Minnesota Vikings, who the Saints defeated in the NFC Championship game last season, 31-28. The first “NBC Sunday Night Football” contest of the season is a classic NFC East rivalry as the Washington Redskins with their new QB Donovan McNabb and head coach Mike Shanahan host Tony Romo and the NFC East champion Dallas Cowboys.

Chad Ochocinco and Terrell Owens look for love on VH1

By Mike Frey

If you like brash NFL players, you are going to want to start tuning in to VH1 on Sunday nights. Fresh off his run on ABC’s Dancing With the Stars, Chad Ochocinco teams up with Terrell Owens to give the channel a tandem of wide receivers that only the reality-show genre could cover. Premiering Sunday, July 11, at 9pm ET, Ochocinco: The Ultimate Catch and Season 2 of The T.O. Show find the superstar athletes taking their game off the field, with Ochocinco looking for love [Update: and, apparently, a seafood lover] from among 85 women — or ocho cinco women, for those who speak Spanish poorly — and T.O. trying to reconnect with his ex, volleyball-player-turned-model Kari Klinkenborg. Both guys are known for grabbing touchdowns and attention, and both shows look good, but in sports there’s always the need to declare a winner, so we present the following statistical breakdown to help you decide which one is right for you.
