TCA: Simon Cowell leaving “American Idol” after this season

PASADENA, Calif. — Making a surprise appearance during the Television Critics Association panel on Monday, Simon Cowell announced that he was leaving American Idol after this season to ready the launch of another talent show, The X Factor, which will premiere on the network in 2011.

Cowell has long been trying to get X Factor on the air in the U.S., and he signed the deal on stage with FOX execs Kevin Reilly and Peter Rice next to him, “so that there can be no more speculation,” said Rice, chairman of entertainment for FOX Broadcasting.

Reilly, president of entertainment for FOX Broadcasting, had no updates regarding reports his network had been wooing Conan O’Brien to defect to FOX amid the late-night shakeup that could bring Jay Leno back to his former 10:35pm slot and push O’Brien and his faltering Tonight Show back to 11:05pm. “I love Conan personally and professionally,” Reilly said. “But he has a decision to make about his future, and until he does, there really can’t be any discussion.” He did say there have been informal talks with O’Brien, but nothing official.

TCA: FOX to sneak peek “Code 58″ in May before June 7 premiere

code-58-logo1

Code 58 (working title), the new action-comedy from Matt Nix (Burn Notice), will have special previews on two nights, Wednesday, May 12, at 8pm ET, and Wednesdays, May 19, at 8pm ET, before making its series premiere Monday, June 7 at 9pm ET on FOX.

“I’m incredibly excited to be doing the show at FOX,” Nix said. “It’s a network that’s known for pushing limits, and that’s what we’re doing here. They’ve really embraced the quirkier, more unconventional aspects of the show, and even encouraged me to go further with them.”

Code 58 (working title) is a comedic look at what happens when an old-school cop and a modern-day detective try to expose the big picture of small crime. Dan Stark (Bradley Whitford) was once a big-shot Dallas detective. Thirty years later, Dan Stark is a washed-up detective who spends most of his time drunk or rehashing his glory days. Dan’s new partner, Jack Bailey (Colin Hanks), is an ambitious, by-the-book and overall promising detective, but is sometimes a bit too snarky for his own good. His habit of undermining himself has earned him a dead-end position in the department. Jack may not see it, but he has little chance of getting out of his situation; his knack for making enemies at the station has assured he is not going anywhere anytime soon.

Jack’s only ally is Assistant District Attorney Liz Townsend (Jenny Wade, Reaper), a quick-witted former girlfriend whom Jack hasn’t quite gotten over and the one person he turns to for help with his current professional predicament. Not helping matters any is Jack and Dan’s boss, Lieutenant Ana Ruiz (Diana Maria Riva), who has committed herself to seeing that Jack and Dan spend the remainder of their days in the Property Crimes Division, assigned to investigate seemingly minor crimes in order to keep them — and the department — out of major trouble.

Code 58 is produced by FOX Television Studios. Matt Nix and Mikkel Bondesen serve as executive producers. Tim Matheson will direct the pilot episode.

Encores of both preview episodes will air Monday, May 31, at 8pm.

We couldn’t be more proud of what Ryan Murphy and the Glee team have created so far, and can’t wait to see what they come up with for Season 2.” [Read more →]

Randy Jackson talks “Idol,” Ellen, Paula and what it takes to win

By Lori Acken

Here’s what Randy Jackson thinks you should know about American Idol’s ninth season, which bows with a two-hour premiere this Tuesday, Jan. 12 at 8pm on FOX.

randy_jackson_web

• It’s gonna be a good one:

“Interesting, wild, crazy … .” And thanks to the series’ new judge, longtime Jackson pal and fellow Louisiana native Ellen DeGeneres, really really funny.

• If you think Ellen has nothing to bring to the AI judges table, you’re wrong:

“We’re going to have a lot of laughs,” Jackson told reporters during a conference call on Friday. “Welcoming Ellen to the fold is a good look. She’s funny, she’s charismatic, she’s really cool. … She’s a die-hard music fan. And she’s a performer herself, so she knows what’s it’s like to perform and entertain.”

And yeah, she’ll speak for us armchair AI quarterbacks at home — cause after all, it’s us who call the game in the end, am I right?

“She brings the lay person point of view. … She will give the at-home viewer a real voice on the judges panel.”

• But he still misses his girl Paula:

“The Paula thing is near and dear to my heart. We speak all the time. She was one of our best friends and she still is. I miss that. Sometimes we look down the judges table and and go, ‘Where’s Paula?’

“Fringe” recap: Grey Matters

You can always tell when you’re in for a mythology episode or a standalone episode by the “previously on Fringe” segments. If you see a scene from the pilot, setting up the premise of the show, then Pattern junkies are probably OK to skip the next hour. If you’re seeing Leonard Nimoy, and severed heads being reattached to bodies, then you might want to pay close attention.

The guy whose head they stole from a cryogenic factory and reattached to his body — the supposed leader of some other-dimensional group — is up and running. He’s heading up a break-in at a mental hospital where he’s either retrieving something vital to his sinister purposes from the brain of a wide-awake patient or reenacting a scene from Hannibal. You know the one. Olivia and the Bishop boys come in to investigate (an orderly was also shot and killed during the escape), and they learn that Slater has been cooped up for 14 years and been diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic. Which always begs the question: Are there any other kind of schizophrenics? [Read more →]
