By Jeff Pfeiffer Follow @ChannelGuideJP In promotion of the release of Guinness World Records 2012 — the latest edition of the long-running book series, which hits U.S. shelves Sept. 15 and will retail for $28.95 — we received notes on a few of the TV, movie, music and other entertainment records featured in the book as compiled by the global authority in record-breaking achievements. Here are some records that stood out: TV RECORDS Highest-Paid Actor in a TV Drama – Hugh Laurie (pictured) of FOX’s House pulls in $400,000 per episode, which makes sense when you learn that, according to [...]

Preview: Syfy’s “Paranormal Witness”

Preview: Syfy’s “Paranormal Witness”

By Jeff Pfeiffer Follow @ChannelGuideJP I screened the first episode of Syfy’s new docu-drama series Paranormal Witness (premiering tonight at 10pm ET/PT) yesterday afternoon, and while I felt some thrills and chills as I watched it, I didn’t think much about it afterward. This morning, however, I found myself awake at about 4:30 for some reason. As I lay in bed trying to get back to sleep, my mind suddenly went back to the screener I had watched, and the two (supposedly real-life) ghost stories contained within it. My brain is sometimes prone to do this after I watch a [...]

Discovery Channel’s “Dinosaur Revolution” is a blast from the prehistoric past

Discovery Channel’s “Dinosaur Revolution” is a blast from the prehistoric past

By Jeff Pfeiffer Follow @ChannelGuideJP Notable dinosaur illustrators and animators have gotten together for the intriguing new Discovery Channel series Dinosaur Revolution that, in the previews I saw, managed to recall for me the best dino-thrills and emotions that I also found in everything from the Walking With Dinosaurs series to the The Land Before Time films and the “Rite of Spring” dinosaur sequence in Disney’s Fantasia. Almost narration-free, the series presents CG-animated vignettes depicting life for various dinosaurs, using the latest theories of how we believe these animals behaved.

Ryan Murphy talks about going from “Glee” to “American Horror Story”

[youtube bdYv7pUDD7o&feature=related] By Stacey Harrison Follow @ChannelGuideSRH Perhaps all of that relentless positivity and self-empowerment they showcase on Glee has left executive producers Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk with a surplus of nastiness they need to get out. If the artfully creepy previews are any indication, American Horror Story will certainly do the trick. Critical reaction has been mixed, but most agree that it is an over-the-top experience. Ostensibly a haunted house story, the series — which airs Wednesdays beginning Oct. 5 on FX — follows the Harmons, who relocate from Boston to Los Angeles in an effort to rebuild [...]

Weather Channel plans comprehensive coverage of Hurricane Irene

Weather Channel plans comprehensive coverage of Hurricane Irene

By Jeff Pfeiffer Follow @ChannelGuideJP The Weather Channel has long found itself in the somewhat dubious position of seeing its broadcast and online ratings go up in times of severe storms and natural disasters, but it’s understandable why so many turn to them in time of need, since the network also has a long tradition of top-notch professional reporting that helps and informs viewers, particularly those in affected areas. Such will be the case now as Hurricane Irene progresses up the East Coast, with the potential to affect up to 55 million people. And already the network has ranked No. [...]

BET special celebrates the short but memorable life of Aaliyah

By Jeff Pfeiffer Follow @ChannelGuideJP Ten years ago today, at the age of 22, R&B singer and actress Aaliyah (born Aaliyah Dana Haughton) had her life and burgeoning career cut tragically short when she and eight others were killed in a plane crash in The Bahamas. Tonight, BET premieres a special that celebrates her memory. Aaliyah: One in a Million, debuting at 8pm ET, looks at Aaliyah’s life and notable moments from her short-lived career with never-before-seen behind-the-scenes footage, her most popular videos, vintage interviews from BET’s earlier years and intimate conversations with the family and friends who knew her [...]

By Jeff Pfeiffer Follow @ChannelGuideJP [youtube qby37xuo9mU&feature=related nolink] As the countdown continues until September 23, when ABC ends the television run of the daytime drama All My Children after 41 years, its sister network, SOAPnet, will celebrate the series with a two-day marathon of classic episodes, September 17 from 7pm-midnight ET/PT, and September 18 from 5pm-midnight ET/PT. The September 17 marathon is themed, “I Love Lucci,” and highlights some of Erica Kane’s (Susan Lucci) memorable moments, while the September 18 marathon, called “All My Children: Last Chance for Romance,” showcases seven of Pine Valley’s most beloved couples: Cliff and Nina, [...]
