“One Tree Hill”: The Slippery Slope NEVER ENDS 23

by haro1d

It’s all over.

Well, not really, but this year’s chapter is. The Season Finale for One Tree Hill aired last night, and truth be told, it easily could have been a series finale. Nearly every one of the OTH gang reached a point of resolution … except for Dan Scott, who still has a way to go. This time, things opened with a summary “montage” such as is usually found at the end of each OTH episode. It went something like this:

Lucas is at the hospital. After delivering Peyton to the emergency ward, he washes his bloody hands and sees the pinkish, bloody water swirl down the drain and probably wonders if that’s what’s happening to Peyton and their life together. Then he goes to watch Peyton in the operating theater.

Cut to Haley, who wakes in the middle of the night to see that Nathan isn’t at home … he’s out on the river court drinking from a whiskey bottle, drowning his sorrows in booze.

We see Julian walk into Clothes Over Bros looking for Brooke but finding Victoria. He tells her he loves Brooke, and tells Victoria to deliver the message to call her. [Read more →]

“One Tree Hill”: The Slippery Slope … Gets MORE Slippery

by Karl J. Paloucek

Yep, it’s official: Lucas and Peyton will not be returning to One Tree Hill next season. Rumors had been swirling around for a while, especially after a video surfaced of OTH star Chad Michael Murray telling fans that he wasn’t being brought back for Season 7 “because they want to save money.” But now, according to a CW rep, it’s a done deal — Murray and costar Hilarie Burton will not be back for next season.

Of course, all of this is a well-engineered publicity stunt ramping up to Monday’s season finale. Usually, a season or series finale in a show like this would lead up to the wedding — but the long-awaited (or dreaded, depending on your perspective) wedding of Lucas and Peyton came and went with surprising speed, which all but ensured that there would be SOME sort of dramatic twist. I don’t think it was a surprise to anyone, really, when Peyton started hemorrhaging after they got back from the wedding. Something terrible had to happen, or there would have been nowhere to go for next week’s finale.

So let the speculation begin:

“One Tree Hill”: The Slippery Slope NEVER ENDS 21

Last night was probably as close as we’ve had to a filler episode for a while, but enough happened that I’d hesitate to designate it as such. All the same, it’s been a while since we’ve seen the miserable specimen of humanity that is Dan Scott, and I’m starting to get concerned … but not really. He’ll surface in the cauldron to make things all bitter again soon enough.

Here’s how it all went down last night:

Fade in on Peyton, by herself, making a video for her and Lucas’ baby, in the event that she shouldn’t survive the birth. Among the important life lessons she tries to condense into this crucial few minutes of parenting, she includes having the right playlist, leaving baby an iPod with 100 songs to live by — because everybody needs music to get through tough things like breakups and school and stuff. She gives words of advice on choosing a best friend, citing Brooke Davis as a role model, because she always puts her friends first. Nathan and Haley get the nod for being potential ersatz mom and dad, and then Peyton entreats baby to take care of Lucas, because he’s going to need him/her. Then Lucas walks in. And he’s mad — he doesn’t want to do anything like this just because things MIGHT go bad. Peyton counters that she wants to get married. Now. Again, Lucas executes the smackdown, saying that he doesn’t want to do anything “just in case.” [Read more →]

We’re in the home stretch, folks, and the plot turns keep on comin’. But we must have a ways to go, because they have to get to Peyton going into labor in the season finale so they can create the “live or die” syndrome that will keep up the suspense in the off season … unless they decide that she’s going to be pregnant and on bedrest for the rest of the series.

Anyway, here’s the rundown of last night’s disasters:

The episode opens with Peyton going stir crazy from being on bed rest. Lucas comes to check on her, and she guesses from his demeanor that he’s up to something good on her behalf. (She’s right: He’s secretly fixing the Comet in the garage, because he’s Superman. Oh, wait — wrong CW series …)

There’s a lot of transition and development going on with the Tree Hill gang this season, so not too many filler episodes. But it still doesn’t help the feeling that this series just goes on and on, and on, and on, and on …

But here’s last night’s recap in all its gory glory:

The episode begins with Victoria waking Brooke in her room. She’s there to discuss the business. Sam, barely awake, says that Victoria frightens her.

At Chiefs practice, Coach Irons tells Nathan tells him that it’s his team now, and that he has to step up and be a leader. Nathan has to take Nino, the snotty new guy, under his wing. But Nino isn’t having it — he challenges Nathan to a game of one-on-one … and loses handily.

Haley gets word from Jamie’s teacher that Jamie has tested into the gifted percentile, and Haley is thrilled — she’s thinking that Jamie might be able to attend Oppenheimer, a school for the gifted. [Read more →]

Yes, this week’s episode of OTH is now last week’s, but better bloggers than this one get a week off now and then. But to compensate, here’s the OTH synopsis for March 30 in absolute detail:

Lucas wakes up after having vivid dreams about Peyton and their shared anxiety over the imminent baby and its threat to Peyton’s life. He wakes up and Nathan is standing by his bedside with a basketball, inviting him to come outside and play at the river court with him and Jamie, since it’s a perfect morning.

Skills is still mooning over the loss of Deb, looking at a picture of the two of them stuck to his refrigerator with a heart-shaped magnet with “Always” written on it. (Which brings up the question of what that magnet is doing in a bachelor’s apartment, of course. And by the way, the whole Skills/Deb thing is STILL weird, kids. That was a beaut of a plot variation that was a little hard to take seriously in the first place, and it’s been fun laughing about it, but it’s time to shut it down already.) [Read more →]

“One Tree Hill”: The Slippery Slope NEVER ENDS 17

Well, a LOT happened on last night’s “One Tree Hill” — definitely not a filler episode. The Sims 3 synergy was a bust, for the most part — other than Dan Scott’s entering the hospital at the beginning, Sim Tree Hill was limited to Jamie’s purported simulation on his laptop, mostly seen at the end of the show.

But take a deep breath, as otherwise, there’s a lot to cover:

Dan enters the hospital for his heart transplant at the same time that Lucas and Peyton show up. Lucas stops and eyes Dan cynically, and Dan says, “I’m getting a heart,” to which Lucas responds, “It’s about time.” Unfortunately, a drug-addled dog trips the emergency technician who’s carrying the fresh heart for transplant and the organ goes skidding across the floor — and the drug-addled dog takes it in his mouth and runs off with it, eating it. (Nicely disgusting, OTH writers.)

Mia is seen in the studio, recording her latest prospective hit … which the A&R folks aren’t going to OK as is — but more about that later.

“One Tree Hill”: The Slippery Slope GOES SIMS

by haro1d

Will the shills never cease?

It wasn’t even mentioned during Monday’s “Next week on ‘One Tree Hill’” preview, but in case you haven’t seen the ads, the March 23 episode of OTH is going to feature morphing transitions in and out of an alternate, idealized world created in EA’s “The Sims 3.” Numerous homemade clips (most from this week, but at least one as far back as five months ago) have made it up on YouTube. The official promo for the episode can be seen here:

Word has it that the “simulated” versions of Lucas, Peyton, Dan Scott and others are introduced as they make their entrances into the episode, and subsequently morph into their real-life counterparts. And of course, as with nearly every other example of radical cross-promotion on The CW, after the episode finishes, viewers can go to CWtv.com and download “The Sims 3″ versions of the OTH cast.

Evil "Grampa" Dan and Jamie are getting along famously ...

by haro1d

“One Tree Hill” returned last night, and if I didn’t know any better, I’d swear that series creator Mark Schwann has been reading this blog. (But really, if you’ve been watching OTH for any length of time at all, you should have a feel for the ebb and flow of events, and how the waxing and waning of tragedy and euphoria are about as consistent as the tides.) It was an episode of turning points for numerous characters in OTH.

As the episode opens up, Brooke storms out of her bedroom in a robe, looking disturbed, telling Julian that “she doesn’t do that.” It’s a full minute before we find out [Read more →]

“One Tree Hill”: The Slippery Slope STALLS For Once

Posted by: haro1d

Well, did you get to see One Tree Hill last night? Because I didn’t. I would love to recap and tell you all about it, but as fate would have it the only thing happening in our house last night was dinner by candlelight. Think I was being romantic, like Lucas or Nathan, or any of the OTH gang, because it’s Valentine’s Day this weekend? Sorry to disappoint you, but the power was out in our neighborhood, preventing ANY watching, recording, etc., of OTH. And in reality, there WAS no episode, so don’t sweat it. Nice to have a bit of a break from the recap business.

But it DOES give me the opportunity to take time to speculate on where the season and show are going, which I’ve been meaning to do. (And as always, feel free to join in the discussion and let me know what YOU think is on the horizon.)

Let’s take a look, shall we? (And bear in mind that I HAVE NOT been able to see last night’s episode.)

Lucas and Peyton: So much to look forward to … Lucas has a career as a writer of books as well as for the screen. Peyton has somehow, miraculously, in the face of the long-collapsing music industry, managed to launch her label and keep it running with loyal fans who would NEVER illegally download or share Mia’s songs or anyone else’s on her label. And they have the little one on the way. There’s always been a brooding, dark undercurrent to these two characters though, and it seems likely that they’re headed for something more like an abyss than total bliss. I don’t know if the show is going to continue for much longer, but if it ends sooner than later, I wouldn’t be surprised if Peyton dies during childbirth, but their baby survives, and Lucas is forced to face life as a single parent. Roll credits.
