“If You Really Knew Me…” on MTV is inspiring

If You Really Knew MeMTV Shows

By Emily Mitchell

“She doesn’t even go here!” This may be one of the funniest quotes from 2004’s Mean Girls. It comes from the part of the movie where all the girls of North Shore High School are gathered in the gymnasium to have a venting session about all the gossip and wrongdoing of high school cliques. If you enjoy this scene as much as I do, then you should tune in to MTV’s newest unscripted show, If You Really Knew Me…

But don’t expect to be laughing much when watching this show. It’s serious and emotional. The premise of the show revolves around Challenge Day, an organization whose mission is “to provide youth and their communities with experiential programs that demonstrate the possibility of love and connection through the celebration of diversity, truth, and full expression.” The program gathers a whole student body into a gymnasium. They play purposely awkward games to interact with each other, followed by intimate small-group discussions and mini-confessionals led and mediated by Challenge Day organizers. This includes the Mean Girls microphone-confessional format.  But what the students reveal is real and heart wrenching, much more than superfluous cattiness.

The Real World Cancun: Episode 4

By Emily Mitchell

This show was filled with new love interests for four of the housemates. (Maybe we should re-define the term “love” as sex.) The courting was quite entertaining. And there was also a family death for one of the cast mates. [Read more →]

The Real World Cancun: Episode Three

By Emily Mitchell

This episode, titled “I Kissed A Girl And I Liked It (At First),” featured the first hook-up between housemates. And yes, it was between two girls. As more and more episodes pass, the housemates begin to open up about their personal lives, and one mentions they have had an abortion. But before we get to those things, we have to discuss the ever-dividing relationship between the guys and the girls.

The Real World Cancun: Episodes One And Two

By Emily Mitchell

MTV has just begun its 22nd season of The Real World. Since 1992, The Real World has brought seven or eight strangers together to live in a house for about four months in various cities across the world, including Paris, Key West, and Chicago.real-world-cancun

This season, the location is Cancun. Let the bikinis reign, and the Patrón and tears flow.

The show begins with cast introductions. The cast is a plethora of personalities and backgrounds. Let’s begin with a short introduction of each member:

CJ- This 24-year-old hunk of a man is an NFL free agent. A punter, to be exact. And if you couldn’t already tell that this blonde hair, blue-eyed boy was an athlete, the huge championship ring that he sports wherever he goes will surely give you a hint. Classy. He also has a girlfriend back home.

Emilee- She is from Boston and works at Hooters. She is very pretty. She was adopted, like fellow castmates Derek and Jonna.

Ayiiia- In her own words, her name is pronounced like the late R&B star Aliyah, without the “L”. She is 21-years-old, from San Diego, CA. She won a four-month online contest where she was voted onto the show by fans.

TV Has Its Place: Michael Jackson’s Impact On TV

20050613_jac_r42_003.jpgby Karl J. Paloucek

A lot is being written about Michael Jackson and will be for days to come, no doubt. Much of it will be deserved praise, much will be analysis of his often strange and sometimes too-public life. But as soon as the news broke, radio stations across the country began playing his music in tribute, and MTV somewhat reverted to its original format, breaking up its programming day to put his videos back in rotation.

I’ve never been a big fan of Jackson’s music, but I would be among the first to agree with what the media has been saying over and over again, [Read more →]

More Stale Popcorn at the 2008 MTV Movie Awards?

Posted by johnnysweeptheleg

2008 MTV Movie Awards_Sandler When I was in high school, I looked forward to the MTV Movie Awards more than the Oscars. Where else would Jason Voorhees receive the Lifetime Achievement Award? Or Alicia Silverstone take home two awards for The Crush? Yeah, remember that one?

The acceptance speeches were always legendary, as well. Lest you forget Jim Carrey’s long-haired, bearded acceptance speech from ’99. I will never forget Keri Russell’s reaction when the bearded one fessed up to a lot of fine looking … well, if you saw it, you remember it. But the last few years have seen underwhelming presentations out of the network.

And the 2008 MTV Movie Awards were more of the s(h)ame. I don’t know if the show truly has been drowning the last few years, or if it just seems less funny because I’m knocking on thirty’s front door, for a show geared toward the little shavers of the world.

Or maybe it’s because the movies to choose from aren’t so hot anymore. I mean, does anyone even know what Step Up 2 the Streets is? Looks like something my fictional kid sister txt msg’d to her BFF. I heard it’s a movie. Or Never Back Down? I was waiting for a confused Tom Petty to walk out and attempt to accept an award for “I Won’t Back Down.” [Read more →]

The Hills: I Just Really Don’t Want to Throw Up.

Posted by ButtonKnows

Here’s a hint: If you’re a cast member on The Hills and you get invited to a party? Like, at the apartment of another cast member of The Hills? And you don’t already live with them?

Go clubbing instead.

Because otherwise, something weird is going to happen to you. Guaranteed. Like, you’re going to part ways with your girlfriend. Or boyfriend. Or roommate. Or Spencer.

Or you’re going to find out that your current or former girlfriend or boyfriend or roommate or Spencer is doing something with a member of the opposite sex that you aren’t going to like one bit.

Which is where we begin tonight’s episode: With Lauren invited to a little get-together at Jason’s so she can meet his —surprise! — new girlfriend. Would you go? No. Would I go? No. Would Lauren go? You betcha! [Read more →]
