Nat Geo Wild’s “Secret Garden” a timely spring special

Here where I live, in southern Wisconsin, we suddenly started experiencing the first taste of spring over the past week. Temperatures in the 50s and 60s rapidly melted off about a foot of snow that had held firm on the ground for the previous six weeks, getting us ready for the official first day of spring this Friday. Amid the first stirrings of spring, it was timely that I was able to screen Nat Geo Wild’s new special Secret Garden, a lovely little program that similarly chronicles nature awakening to new seasons, and also timed in its airing near the first […]

Nat Geo Wild’s Sharkfest returns to try to take a bite out of Shark Week

Last year, Nat Geo Wild must have looked at Discovery’s Shark Week ratings and decided to join the feeding frenzy among viewers to watch all things “shark,” as the network debuted the similarly themed Sharkfest. In 2014, Sharkfest is back for its second installment on Nat Geo Wild, beginning Aug. 10 (same day as Shark Week). One promising element of Sharkfest versus Shark Week is that, per Nat Geo Wild’s press release, they promise no mockumentaries: “… scare tactics and mockumentaries are best left to others,” the release states (a nice shot at Discovery, which received some flak last year […]

Ranking the 2014 Puppy Bowl, Kitten Bowl and Fish Bowl

Before, during and after Super Bowl XLVIII there were a number of other viewing options to occupy your time if you so chose (which may have come in handy for many, given how the Big Game almost immediately turned into a blowout). Animal lovers, in particular, had more options than usual this year to get their “bowl” fix on. There was, of course, the tried-and-true Puppy Bowl, which has adorably dominated the space for 10 installments now. But newcomers Kitten Bowl and Fish Bowl also appeared on the scene this past Super Bowl Sunday, staking claims for not only the […]
