“Sex and the City” fandom not required to enjoy “The Carrie Diaries”

“Sex and the City” fandom not required to enjoy “The Carrie Diaries”

As a straight man, I wasn’t necessarily in the primary demo that seemed to be most drawn to HBO’s famed 1998-2004 series Sex and the City, which was inspired by the writings of Candace Bushnell and followed the romantic adventures of Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) and her gal pals in the Big Apple. I tuned in enough to be able to appreciate the writing and acting, but I didn’t fully connect with or relate to, I suppose, the women, or their glamorous Manhattan backdrop. So when I first heard that The CW was creating a series out of The Carrie Diaries – based on [...]

Cycle 20 of “America’s Next Top Model” will include male models

The CW announced today that it has ordered a 20th cycle of its hit reality series America’s Next Top Model. As part of the network’s ongoing strategy to increase its amount of summer programming, it says that Cycle 20 of ANTM will debut in Summer 2013 (no premiere date yet). In even bigger news, for the first time, male models will be added to the group of contestants competing for the title of America’s Next Top Model. The men will move into the models’ house alongside the women. The CW also says that in Cycle 20, viewers will continue to [...]

5 schoolyard games that need to be reality TV shows

Maybe (but probably not) you saw the new competition series Oh Sit! on The CW last night, an extreme version of musical chairs. Seriously. We’re not making this up. It was on TV and everything. There’s video evidence above. But here are five new reality TV schoolyard games we did make up: Duck Duck Goose of Doom Experts in various disciplines of mixed martial arts sit in a circle, with the picker challenging the goose to chase him in a Ninja Warrior-style course, followed by a cage-fighting match. Tube Top Tetherball Tetherball got a bounce in popularity from Napoleon Dynamite, [...]

“America’s Next Top Model” Cycle 19: College Edition gives viewers a vote

“America’s Next Top Model” Cycle 19: College Edition gives viewers a vote

The latest edition of America’s Next Top Model is looking to shake things up. After the shocking April announcement that long-time mentor Jay Manuel, judge Nigel Barker and runway coach J. Alexander would not be returning, ANTM Cycle 19 returns with an all-new crew for its first-ever “College Edition” on Friday, Aug. 24, at 8pm on The CW. Host Tyra Banks leads the panel of judges, alongside fashion public relations maven Kelly Cutrone and former boxer and international male supermodel Rob Evans. In a new twist this season, the audience will serve as the fourth judge. Viewers will be able [...]

Comic-Con 2012: “Cult” review

Continuing The CW’s descent into darkness that began with the surprisingly lurid Arrow, Cult is a meta-upon-meta scare series that tries to blur the line between what’s real and what’s paranoid fantasy. A small but devoted fan base is obsessed, to put it lightly, with the series Cult, which airs on The CW (!). It’s about a messianic figure named Billy Grimm (Robert Knepper) whose followers obey him with a Manson-esque furor. But there’s one former follower, Kelly (Alona Tal), who is now with law enforcement and is trying to save some of her family members still in Billly’s grasp, [...]

Comic-Con 2012: “Arrow” review

We’re not in Smallville anymore, that’s for sure. With Arrow, the upcoming small-screen interpretation of the DC Comics character Green Arrow, The CW is taking a page out of the Christopher Nolan playbook, forsaking any BAM! POW! ZAP! moments and going dark. Very dark. Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) is a vacuous, materialistic playboy who is heir to his family’s Queen Industries empire. He’s such a jerk, in fact, that he decides to take his girlfriend’s sister on a boat ride with him, and not just so he can show her the stateroom. But a storm at sea wrecks the ship, [...]

Epilogue: Why “H8R” Gets It Wrong

Epilogue: Why “H8R” Gets It Wrong

by Karl J. Paloucek Follow @ChannelGuide Like everyone else on our editorial staff, I was asked to submit something about a celebrity whom I hate as part of our comment on the premiere of The CW’s H8R, featuring the ever-ubiquitous Mario Lopez. I’d like to say that I’m so virtuous that I just couldn’t muster anybody that I hated. To some extent, that’s true — I tend to think that life’s a bit too short to throw hate at people I don’t even know. (I barely have enough time to hate so many of the people I do know …) [...]

“Channel Guide” staff plays the office version of “H8R”

“Channel Guide” staff plays the office version of “H8R”

By Stacey Harrison Follow @ChannelGuideSRH Deep down everybody wants to be loved, right? Even people who go out of their way to gain notoriety for being shallow, obnoxious, confrontational jerks who don’t think life is worth living unless it’s in front of the camera. The CW attempts to heal this raw societal wound with H8R, which premieres tonight at 8pm. The Mario Lopez-hosted show pairs one tragically misunderstood celebrity with an ordinary person who openly despises them. Some of the H8-ees include Snooki from Jersey Shore, Kim Kardashian (Note: the “H8R” in her episode is NOT new hubby Kris Humphries), [...]

Sarah Palin beats Snooki as worst female reality star at lighthearted Bennie Awards

Sarah Palin beats Snooki as worst female reality star at lighthearted Bennie Awards

By Jeff Pfeiffer Later this week, we’ll be talking about the Razzie Awards, the infamous and hilarious awards that serve as the anti-Oscars, honoring the worst in film from the past year. But this morning, we received notice of a similar award that was unfamiliar to us. The 2011 Bennie Award winners were announced. Only in their second year, the awards recognize the worst in prime time television. The awards’ name (and, presumably, the face seen on the award itself) are inspired by former NBC head Ben Silverman, the architect behind failed series such as Knight Rider, Kath & Kim [...]
