2010 “NFL Opening Kickoff” and “Sunday Night Football” on NBC

By Ryan Berenz

We already gave you the complete NFL TV schedule for 2010, but we’ve got tons of other football information from the NFL’s TV partners coming your way this week. We’ll start with NBC, who has the first NFL game of the season on Thursday night between the Vikings and Saints and also carries the Sunday Night Football Week 1 matchup between the Cowboys and Redskins. NBC also has the Football Night in America studio show returning. Here’s the complete press release from NBC, including lots of analyst quotage as well as the entire Sunday Night Football schedule:

SUPER BOWL CHAMPION SAINTS HOST BRETT FAVRE AND THE VIKINGS IN THURSDAY NIGHT “NFL OPENING KICKOFF” ON NBC – COVERAGE STARTS AT 7:30 PM ET

COWBOYS-REDKINS RESUME HEATED NFC EAST RIVALRY IN “NBC SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL” DEBUT: This is a very very different looking Washington Redskins team.” – SNF’s Collinsworth

NEW YORK – Sept. 8, 2010 – The NFL season kicks off as the Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints host Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings in a rematch of last season’s NFC Championship Game. Coverage begins Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. ET on NBC with NFL Kickoff 2010 featuring music from Taylor Swift and the Dave Matthews Band and the “Football Night in America” team.  In a tradition that began in 2004, the Super Bowl champions annually host the NFL Thursday night “NFL Kickoff” the following year.

NFL preseason kicks off Aug. 8 on NBC

By Ryan

I think I’m about ready to shovel the dirt on my favorite MLB team, but I’m not quite ready for football yet. And I probably won’t be ready until the first week of September. There’s almost nothing in the NFL preseason that gets me fired up for the regular season. Preseason games don’t count for anything, and usually I’m happy to just get through it injury-free. Teams that look like they’re actually trying to win preseason games annoy me. I’m fine with an 18-game regular season so long as they get rid of some of these useless practice games. So, now that I’ve got that out there, here are the details from NBC on their coverage of this weekend’s useless practice Hall of Fame Game from Canton, Ohio:

“NBC SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL” KICKS OFF 2010 SEASON WITH HALL OF FAME GAME, COWBOYS VS. BENGALS, SUNDAY AT 8 PM ET

Bengals WR Terrell Owens Faces the Cowboys, His Former Team, For the First Time

EA SPORTS Madden NFL 11 Pigskin Pro-Am: Flag Football Game Featuring NFL Legends & Hollywood Stars to Air Sunday on NBC at 7 PM ET Preceding Hall of Fame Game

NEW YORK – August 4, 2010 – “NBC Sunday Night Football” will make its 2010 season debut with the Hall of Fame Game between the defending NFC East champion Dallas Cowboys and the AFC North champion Cincinnati Bengals from Canton, Ohio, Sunday at 8 pm. ET.  Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth will have the call from Canton with Andrea Kremer handling the reporting duties.

The NFL will open this season on NBC, Thursday, Sept. 9, with the Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints hosting the NFC North champion Minnesota Vikings, who the Saints defeated in the NFC Championship game last season, 31-28. The first “NBC Sunday Night Football” contest of the season is a classic NFC East rivalry as the Washington Redskins with their new QB Donovan McNabb and head coach Mike Shanahan host Tony Romo and the NFC East champion Dallas Cowboys.

Where to watch X Games 16

By Ryan Berenz

The X Games are back in Los Angeles July 29-Aug. 1 for the 16th edition, and ESPN has plenty of ways to keep the kids plugged in to all things X. There’s even something called “Hookit,” which up until now I thought was some kind of fancy tobacco pipe. Since I’m about 15 years older than the oldest X Games viewer, I’m not going to attempt to be “rad.” I’ll just let this pair of press releases from ESPN explain it:

ESPN’s X Games Takes Over Downtown Los Angeles

ESPN – together with Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) and the Los Angeles Coliseum – will celebrate its 16th annual action sports event, the X Games, entirely downtown between STAPLES Center, Nokia Theatre, the Los Angeles Coliseum and L.A. LIVE. The 2010 event will mark the seventh consecutive year that the X Games will take place in Los Angeles.  Thirty-one hours of live X Games programming on ESPN and ESPN2 – all in high definition – will be aired July 29 through August 1, as well as on ESPN International, ESPN.com\action, ESPN Classic, ESPN3.com, and SportsCenter.

“It has been seven years since we first had X Games events at the Los Angeles Coliseum, and ESPN couldn’t be more thrilled to be returning this year with several of our sports,” said Jack Wienert, ESPN executive director, X Games Event Management. “As the X Games franchise continues to grow, we are proud and excited about our continued great relationship with AEG as we expand our presence this year downtown at STAPLES Center and L.A. LIVE.”

2010 MLB All-Star Game airs on FOX

By Ryan Berenz

Can you remember the last time the NL won an All-Star Game? It was July 9, 1996, with a 6-0 win over the AL. Since then, the AL has had complete dominance over the Senior Circuit, save for that unfortunate 7-7 in the 2002 game. Even when the NL seems to have it won, they still manage to pull defeat from the jaws of victory. Take the 2007 game in which the NL’s Aaron Rowand flew out with the bases loaded in the 9th inning to seal the AL’s 5-4 victory. Or take 2008’s 15-inning marathon at old Yankee Stadium, in which the NL failed to score with the bases loaded and one out in the 12th inning. See if the streak finally ends this year as baseball’s best come to Angel Stadium in Anaheim, Calif., for the 81st Midsummer Classic.

FOX once again has coverage of the All-Star Game on Tuesday, July 13, beginning at 8pm ET. Here are the details from FOX:

2010 MLB ALL-STAR GAME ON FOX
Tuesday, July 13 – 8:00 PM ET – Live in 3D & HD from Angels Stadium in Anaheim, Calif.

FOX Sports and MLB are proud to present baseball’s brightest stars, all on one stage, Tuesday, July 13 (8:00 PM ET-conclusion) during the 81st Major League Baseball All-Star Game, live from Angels Stadium in Anaheim. It is the 12th MLB All-Star Game broadcast by FOX Sports (1997, 1999, 2001-10), and all 12 have been called by play-by-play announcer Joe Buck and analyst Tim McCarver (Bob Brenly worked with Buck & McCarver in 1997 & 1998). McCarver, a two-time National League All-Star catcher with the Cardinals (1966 & 1967), is calling the 19th All-Star Game of his Hall of Fame-worthy broadcasting career, the most by any broadcaster in history. Buck’s 11 All-Star Game broadcasts tie him for second on the all-time list of play-by-play announcers with Mel Allen (Curt Gowdy is first with 13). The pairing of Buck and McCarver for 12 All-Star Games is also a record. The next closest duo are Curt Gowdy and Tony Kubek, who called a total of seven All-Star Games together from 1969 to 1975.

Where to watch the 2010 MLB Home Run Derby

By Ryan Berenz

ESPN will air the 2010 State Farm Home Run Derby, annually one of the summer’s most popular TV sports events, on Monday, July 12, at 8pm ET. This year’s derby field is a little strange — there are no past winners participating, and no one from last year’s derby is in it this year (Prince Fielder, pictured, was last year’s winner). So here is the lineup of guys taking batting practice for three long, exhausting hours tonight:

Corey Hart, Brewers

Chris Young, Diamondbacks

Nick Swisher, Yankees

Hanley Ramirez, Marlins

Vernon Wells, Blue Jays

Miguel Cabrera, Tigers

Matt Holliday, Cardinals

David Ortiz, Red Sox

Where to watch the Netherlands vs. Spain World Cup final match

By Ryan Berenz

The World Cup is down to its final match, and I am a little sad to see the tournament coming to an end. This is the most fun I’ve ever had watching soccer (which doesn’t say much, because I almost never watch it otherwise), and I want to especially thank Univision for streaming all the games for free (without the pesky ESPN3.com requirements). The Univision announcers have an infectious enthusiasm for the game, and even though I only understand about every fifth word they say, “Gooooooolaaaaaaaaaasssssooooooo!” needs no translation.

ABC will air the final match between the Netherlands and Spain on Sunday, July 11, beginning at 1:30pm ET (match starts at 2:30pm ET). Before the tournament started, I picked Netherlands over Portugal in the final match. Since Portugal is essentially Spain, I’m saying I was correct in picking the finals.

You can see ESPN analysts’ predictions for the final match after the jump.

ESPN’s “E:60″: Plaxico Burress, Tom Ellenson and Parkersburg, Iowa

By Ryan

Features on the Tuesday, Aug. 25 (7pm ET) edition of ESPN’s sports newsmagazine series E:60:

Plaxico Burress — Former N.Y. Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress, will talk in detail with correspondent Jeremy Schaap in an exclusive E:60 interview, Tuesday, Aug. 25, at 7 p.m. ET, about the early morning hours of Nov. 29, when he accidentally shot himself in the leg with his own gun at the Latin Quarter nightclub in Midtown N.Y., and about the two-year jail sentence he now faces. Burress pleaded guilty Thursday, Aug. 20, to the weapons charge and avoided what would have been a mandatory minimum sentence of three years for second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He will head to prison when he is officially sentenced Sept. 22, and will be eligible for release after serving a little more than 20 months. The NFL has suspended Burress but will reinstate him once he completes his sentence. Burress previously had a license to carry the gun in Florida, but it had expired nearly seven months before the shooting.

Farewell To “Earl” … At Least On NBC

By Ryan

First heard about on Ethan Suplee’s Twitter feed, and confirmed by Zap2it today, My Name Is Earl isn’t on NBC’s 2009 fall schedule. I guess we’re disappointed, but not totally surprised. As a follower of the show from the beginning, and a blogger of the show for the past two seasons, I’ve observed the show’s steady decline. But it always felt like Greg Garcia and company still had plenty of list items left in them, and I was hoping that getting back to simpler stories of a guy and his list in Season 4 might spark a comeback. Alas.

Perhaps if they’d only taken our advice and used more Dan Coscino.

Curt Schilling Is Plugged In With The Kids

By Ryan

Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling, he of bloody sock fame, announced via his blog 38 Pitches that he was retiring, and even held somewhat of a press conference on his blog. Ever the new-media savvy one, now Schilling is bypassing all the major sports TV networks and giving an exclusive interview with video game network G4 (maybe ESPN doesn’t find Schilling newsworthy anymore, but I find that hard to believe). Adam Sessler, host and editor-in-chief of G4′s X-Play is the first to bring you an exclusive interview with former World Series MVP and future Hall of Famer regarding his retirement from baseball. The interview will air on G4 on Thursday, March 26 at 6:30pm ET/PT.

Then stay tuned for a brand new episode of Hurl!
